Family Fishing at Sunset

July has finally arrived! It’s time for us to flip the calendar month and start thinking about the upcoming holiday – Independence Day!

Typically, America’s birthday is filled with many different types of public celebrations including parades, fireworks and fairs, but the majority of these events have been either canceled or postponed due to COVID-19.

We understand that you’re probably not thrilled with the idea of celebrating another holiday during a pandemic, but it is still possible to safely enjoy the 4th of July. Consider incorporating these tips into your weekend itinerary.

  1. Review your local community updates

Before planning a get-together, be sure to review updates from your local health department to have a better understanding of the situation in your community. You can also learn about local orders, business re-openings and other safety guidelines.

  2. Keep your group small

The more closely you interact with others and the longer the interaction, the greater the risk of spread. If you choose to gather with loved ones, please try to keep your group number low.

  3. Try to stay outdoors

“Social distancing” has now become a phrase that we have become all too familiar with. To safely stay within 6 feet of others, choose an outdoor space. Indoor spaces, in general, are riskier than outdoor spaces because there’s less ventilation, and it’s more challenging to keep people apart.

  4. Bring your own supplies

If you are dining together, consider bringing along your own food, beverages and picnic supplies to avoid sharing items with those outside your immediate family.
  5. Wash your hands

We know, we know; this is a rule you probably won’t ever forget, but we think it never hurts to give friendly reminders. Hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol will work while spending time outdoors but don’t remove all types of germs. When you return home, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

We’ll be the first to say 2020 has been tough. It’s challenging to spend holiday after holiday without the large company of family and friends, but with a little perseverance and dedication, we can all work together to fight coronavirus.

The Lions Pride Board and Staff would like to wish you a safe, healthy 4th of July!

places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss

Saturday, March 2, is Read Across America Day, a one-day celebration that encourages children to read 365 days a year. The date was selected to commemorate the birthday date of, arguably the world’s most popular children’s author, Dr. Seuss.

2019 would be Dr. Seuss’s 115th birthday. To honor the occasion, we’ve compiled 15 fascinating facts that you might not already know about Theodor Seuss Geisel.

  1. Seuss was born as Theodor Seuss Geisel on March 2, 1904. Throughout his lifetime, he used many pen names include Theo LeSieg (Geisel spelled backward), L. Pasteur, D.G. Rossetti ’25, T. Seuss and most famously, Dr. Seuss.
  2. Most people pronounce “Seuss” incorrectly. “Zoyce” is the German pronunciation of Seuss.
  3. His love of rhyme came from his mother who would entertain him with verses she used to sell pies at a bakery.
  4. Contrary to his most popular pen name, Dr. Seuss was not actually a doctor. He adopted the prefix because his father always hoped he would practice medicine.
  5. Theodor attended Dartmouth College from 1921-1925, where he was voted “Least Likely to Succeed.”
  6. Before writing children’s’ books, Dr. Seuss spent some time in the advertising industry. He started creating books for kids because it was one of the few creative projects that was not prohibited in his contract.
  7. His debut book, “To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street” was rejected 27 times before it was published.
  8. The book, “Green Eggs and Ham” was written based on a dare. His publisher bet him $50 that he could not write a book with only 50 words. Dr. Seuss, of course, delivered.
  9. The inspiration behind “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” was Seuss himself.
  10. Seuss was credited with inventing the word, “nerd,” which appeared in “If I Ran A Zoo” in 1950.
  11. “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” was the last book he published. The book has become one of the most popular gifts for graduates.
  12. During his lifetime, he published 44 picture books.
  13. He kept a closet of wacky hats. Whenever he was feeling the twinge of writer’s block, he would find a hat that would help the words flow.
  14. Seuss was the first person to win a Pulitzer Prize for writing children’s books.
  15. In 2010, Dr. Seuss was listed in Life Books’ list of “100 People Who Changed the World.”

It should come as no surprise that an exciting author would also have an interesting life! What was your or your child’s favorite Dr. Seuss book? Let us know in the comments below.

Each January, we honor and celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1983, Legislation marked the birthday of Dr. King as a federal holiday. But in 1994, Congress designated the holiday as a national day of service. Each year, on the third Monday of January, we are all encouraged to look at Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthdate as a “day on, not a day off.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. In 1948, he received a BA degree from Morehouse College, at the age of 19. He was awarded a BD degree after three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary.

Shortly after, he became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He was always a strong advocate of civil rights, so he joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as a member of the executive committee. In early December 1955, he accepted leadership as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott lasted a total of 382 days. On December 21, 1956, the Supreme Court of the United States declared bus segregation as unconstitutional. From that point on, people of all races rode the bus together as equals.

In 1957, he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a newly created organization that was formed to provide leadership for the civil rights movement. In the next eleven years, Dr. King would travel over six million miles and give over 2500 speeches. Meanwhile, he wrote five books as well as several articles and led enormous peaceful protests. He may be most known for leading the 1963 march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people and delivering his “I Have A Dream” speech. During his lifetime, he was arrested more than 25 times, awarded five honorary degrees and was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1968, while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, he was shot. He died on April 4.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all. The Day of Service is intended for engaging in community action that works to solve social problems. Service has an incredible ability to unite people of all ages and backgrounds while building stronger communities.

Honor the memory of Dr. King on Monday, January 21, by choosing to serve. Looking for a new service project? You need to see the Lions Club’s complete list of ideas for families. What project will you and your club start next? We’d love to hear in the comments below.

4th of July FireworksWe hope all of our traveling Lions are enjoying their time in Fukuoka, but for those of us still of us in the United States, are probably busy preparing for America’s birthday! Next Monday is Independence Day; do you have plans set? If not, it’s not too late to get something scheduled before the big holiday.

Wisconsin is an outstanding place to celebrate July 4th because it’s a magical time of year where we are blessed with beautiful weather. Typically most celebrations include food, fireworks and fun. What’s better than that?

No matter where you are in the state, there is bound to be a place nearby celebrating our independence with a fun event, but here are a few standouts from Travel Wisconsin:

Riverfront Rendezvous – Located only 17 miles west of Lions Pride, Stevens Point celebrates Independence Day the weekend before the holiday with live music, food and fireworks. Since the event takes place on the Wisconsin River, it’s also the perfect place to show off your boat in Saturday’s boat parade.

Downtown Milwaukee Fireworks – One of the largest shows in Wisconsin, Milwaukee’s Lakefront has become a popular location for July 4th Festivities (happening on Sunday, July 3). If you plan on attending this show, be sure to get there early to get a prime spot. Activities take place all day long.

Fireworks Cruise – Enjoy fireworks out on the St. Croix River in Hudson, Wisconsin. You’ve never seen a display like this before! The cruise takes place on both Sunday and Monday. Both cruises board at 7:30 pm and cruises take place from 8 pm to 11 pm.

4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza – If you love fireworks, this is a display you won’t want to miss. The Downtown Dells is planning a show with over 1300 fireworks. Refreshments will be served on site, and the display will start at dusk.

July 4th Celebration – Spend a day of fun in Manitowish Waters. The celebration begins at 9 am and includes arts and crafts, live music, a cookout, airplane rides, water ski show and more – truly something for everyone!

These are only five of literally hundreds of events happening over the July 4th weekend (245 events to be exact). How do you plan to spend America’s birthday?

Fun Facts About Leap Day

365 days, birthday, calendar, china, elementary school, ethopia, february 29, julius cesar, leap day, leapers, leaplings, lions pride, monday, proposal, science, women, year

There are 365 days in a calendar year, but did you know that it actually takes the Earth Lion Leapingabout 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds to rotate around the sun? To make up for the difference, every four years we are graced with an extra day called Leap Day, which is coming up this Monday.

You probably remember the number 365 ¼ from an elementary school science class, but bet you didn’t know all of the following fun facts about Leap Year (until now, of course):

  1. The chance of being born on February 29 is approximately 1 in 1,461.

Those born on this special day are called “Leapers” or “Leaplings”, and typically celebrate their birthday on February 28 or March 1.

  1. In Leap Years, it is considered “acceptable” for women to propose to men.

Of course, times have changed where there is nothing wrong for women to propose marriage; however, this was not always the case. Legend says that the tradition goes back to the 5th Century Ireland when St. Bridget was complaining to St. Patrick about women having to wait so long for men to propose. He agreed to let women have one day to propose, February 29.

  2. We add an additional day to the calendar, almost every 4 years.

Julius Cesar first introduced the Leap Year in 46 BC. His only criterion was that the year must be divisible by 4. Unfortunately, this formula produced too many leap years, but wasn’t fixed until the creation of the Gregorian Calendar where two more criteria were added:

If the year can be evenly divided by 100, it is not a leap year, unless; the year is also evenly divisible by 400 then it is a leap year.

Many of us will never see a skipped Leap Year. The last skipped Leap Year was in 1900, and the next skipped Leap Year will be in the year 2100.Not all countries add an extra day.

  1. Rather than adding another day in February, the Chinese calendar adds an entire month every three years. Their last Leap Year was in 2015.

In Ethiopia, the calendar consists of 13 months. The first 12 months have 30 days each and the last month has 5 days in the typical year, and 6 days in a Leap Year.

Remember, it’s not every day that we get an extra 24 hours to spend as we choose! How do you plan to spend your bonus day?

Happy Leap Day from Lions Pride!

There may not be snow on the ground (at least here in Central Wisconsin), but the many upcoming events tell us that Christmas is on its way. Take a look at just a few of the several holiday events happening both near and far this weekend:

December 11

There’s no better way to celebrate the season with the sound of big band music. The Brew City Big Band will be performing the music of Frank Sinatra, in honor of his 100th birthday, at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Enjoy drink specials, small plates and ballroom dancing from 6 pm to 10 pm. Tickets are $14 or $12 for students and Center Members.

Downtown Reedsburg

Experience the magic of Christmas coming to life in the windows of participating businesses in Downtown Reedsburg. The 2015 “Living Windows” theme is A-Z Christmas. Each window will reflect all things Christmas-related using only the letter chosen by the business. Come to this free event from 6 pm to 8 pm and take a horse drawn wagon ride, sing with carolers and enjoy hot drinks and treats.

Santa must be the world’s greatest scientist if science and magic are one in the same. Join DoktorKaboom at the Ruth A. Knoll Theatre in Hartford, as he tries to discover how Santa Claus makes reindeer fly, decides who makes the Naughty and Nice List and manages to get down a chimney. In an attempt to one-up Ole Kris Kringle, DoktorKaboom experiments with a hovercraft, creates and exothermic reaction and explores the chemical makeup of snow. Ticket prices range from $5 to $14 and the show begins at 5:30 pm.

December 12

Visit the Stoughton Opera House on Saturday night and listen to the music of Four Guyz in Dinner Jackets. The premiere Milwaukee doo-wop group promises to deliver high-velocity holiday cheer as they perform your favorite seasonal favorites in a delightful four-part harmony. Individual tickets are $20.

Enjoy various fun winter activities with a town synonymous with the Red-Nosed Reindeer at Rudolph’s Country Christmas. All-day activities will leave you with a true holiday feeling. The fun starts at 9 am. View the day’s events.

Be entertained by the Nicolet Players as they perform the holiday class, “A Christmas Carol”. Back by popular event, this fun show will remind you of the true meaning of the holidays. Enjoy the inspiring message as told by Scrooge, Tiny Tim and three persuasive ghosts. The show will be happening all weekend long. Ticket prices are $9 for the general public and $7 for students and seniors.

Month-Long Events

A Franks Christmas

Throughout the month of December, “Let Me Be Frank” Productions will present “A Frank’s Christmas: The Christmas Schooner”. Enjoy a night of fun and frolic as you appreciate the outstanding voices and hilarious story about the holidays. In November 2013, our organization was honored to be selected to receive proceeds from the show. We can’t say enough about these talented performers!

How do you plan to spend the days leading up to Christmas? From all of us here at Lions Pride, we hope you continue to enjoy the holiday season. There’s still lots of time to consider making a year-end contribution, your gifts are truly making a difference.

“You know you are getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.” –Bob Hope

It’s everyone’s favorite day of the year, (well, most of us still enjoy our birthdays!) A day when we can think back on the year we just completed and daydream about what the next year holds. A day when strangers will wish you well and it’s easy to find a restaurant that will give you a dessert for free. It’s a day when we can all feel truly special.

We have an extra special birthday happening at our office tomorrow. Our Chairman Dewey Carl will be celebrating his day of birth.

In honor of this day, we thought it would be fun to compile a list of birthday facts that we can all appreciate, even if it’s not our special day!

Did you know…?

  • Out of every 23 people, there is a 50/50 chance that two will share the same birthday.
  • August is the most popular birthday month. About 9 percent of the world’s population is born in the eighth month of the year.
  • Birthday cards make up nearly 58 percent of all cards purchased in the United States.
  • The world’s largest birthday cake was made in 1989 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Fort Payne, Indiana. The cake weighed over 128,000 pounds.
  • You can find out what special events happened on your birthday by visiting http://www.mybirthdayfacts.com.

We know that it can be sometimes difficult to find the perfect present for a loved one. Instead of the typical birthday card or flowers, give them something that will really make an impact. Make a donation in honor of the birthday boy or girl to Lions Pride. They will know that your gift truly came from the heart and you will know that your gift helps preserve, protect and support the continuation of all WLF projects. Now that’s a birthday gift we can all agree on.

Happy birthday, Chairman Dewey Carl!
