We are nearing the end of another month, and it may be somewhat hard to believe that it is already time for the new Wisconsin Lions District Governors to meet. The entire MD27 Council of Governors is scheduled to meet this Saturday at the Hotel Mead & Conference Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

The first meeting of the 2020-2021 Lionistic Year will be an exciting one as it will be filled with lots of information and, for many of us, it will the first time that we are able to see friends in person. The day will begin with the call to order, introduction and opening remarks, the approval of the agenda and last July meeting minutes, followed by the ratification of all previous action and minutes.

Afterward, the new District Governors will hear brief reports from nearly 30 district chairpersons. Yes, we know that sounds like a lot of reports, but remember they only meet four times each year, so there’s plenty to discuss.

As the meeting continues the DGs will listen to MD27 and state committee reports. They will also hear from many of the State Lions organizations, including Lions Pride.

We are looking forward to seeing our fellow Lions in person but want to ensure everyone stays safe during the pandemic. At this time, we recommend the following safety tips:

  • At this time, it is believed that COVID-19 is spread mainly from person to person. Avoid close contact with others by maintaining a distance of at least six feet.
  • Consider wearing a cloth face cover when in the presence of others, just in case the social distance is hard to maintain.
  • Remember to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds.)

We are thrilled to be able to see the friendly faces of friends, even if they are partially covered by masks. We know there are smiles underneath. We’d like to wish all of our new DGs a safe, productive weekend and a successful year!

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” –ChineseTrees proverb

As the long living species on Earth, trees have an amazing ability to connect to the past, present and future, while also providing a whole slew of environmental and health benefits. Here in Wisconsin, many of us are lucky enough to be surrounded by trees of all shapes and sizes, but that doesn’t mean we should sit back and idle.

Tomorrow marks the observance of Arbor Day, and while the ground may still be a bit too frozen to physically plant a tree, there’s no better time to make plans for a club tree planting project.

As part of the Lions organization, we understand that every tree planted is part of a broader scale effort by members all over the world to make a significant impact on the environment. According to the European Environment Agency, one mature tree will absorb more than 48 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen in exchange. Read more interesting tree facts from the Arbor Day Foundation.

Before creating your tree planting project, consider the following preparations from LCIF:

  • Evaluate your community’s needs – is there an area where new trees may be more beneficial over others?
  • Work with a local forestry or agriculture department to identify the most appropriate tree species for the local environment.
  • Partner with other local groups or organizations to leverage resources and expertise.
  • Outline a plan that includes procedures, materials needed and expenses.
  • Submit your plan and budget to your club, district or multiple district for approval.

Once your plan is approved, the fun can begin:

  • Request Lion volunteers for the project committee.
  • Obtain approvals or permit for your project, if necessary.
  • Create marketing materials such as a flyer, press release or social media post to promote the event – be sure to include protective clothing recommendations for volunteers!
  • Invite the local media to observe or take part in the project.
  • Remember, if your Lions Club participates, you will fulfill complete the Environment portion of the Centennial Service Challenge.

There’s no need to worry about rushing to complete your tree planting project. Some experts even say that planting in the fall can have its advantages. No matter when you decide to plant trees, remember that you are making an important contribution to both present day life as well as future generations.

Happy Arbor Day from Lions Pride!

April is National Community Service Month. When was the time you and your club organized a project that was close to your heart? If it seems like it’s later, rather than sooner, there’s never been a better time to start the planning process.Lions Helping Hand

To help guide you through the process, follow these steps from Lions Club International:

  1. Brainstorm a list of possible programs

You can find a need by asking yourself and your club the following questions:
    a. What do you like best about your community?
    b. What could use improving in the community?
    c. What kinds of resources are required to make the proposed improvements?

Identify and list three to five qualities and improvements.

  1. Designate committees

After coming up with your list of ideas, set up committees to research the projects further. Committee members should continue to brainstorm ideas for implementation, possible action steps and include other interested participants.

  2. Conduct research

Reach out to community contacts to learn more about the opportunity. Find out if they think the project will help the community and if they have ideas about how the project can be completed.

  3. Develop relationships with other community organizations

In many cases, two heads are better than one. Community organizations may already have completed substantial research about your project topic and have more ideas on how to accomplish the goal.

  4. Create a written plan

Projects with a written plan that includes lots of details are much more likely to get completed. Be sure to include the goals and objectives, time frame and necessary resources.

  5. Implement your plan

Involve your members and other interested participants throughout the project implementation phase. Don’t forget to keep everyone up-to-date on the progress and reward success. When the project is complete, take some time to review the entire planning process to determine what worked and what didn’t to improve the next project plan.

Lions Pride is always on the lookout to find Lions Clubs that are interested in supporting the Wisconsin Lions Camp and all other WLF projects. If you and your club are interested in learning more, contact us today to find out what Lions Pride is all about. You could even be featured in a future blog post! Let’s work together to preserve, provide and protect for Lions Camp and all other WLF statewide projects.

Happy Community Service Month!
