Bom bombombom bom bom… bom bombombom bomHappy Graduates

Wow! It’s hard to believe but another school year has come and gone (although students may or may not agree with our sentiment). This weekend, thousands of students across the country will be putting on their caps and gowns and preparing for the next phase of their lives as graduates. To celebrate their enormous accomplishment, we thought it would be fun to compile a few interesting facts about the graduation ceremony:

  • Pomp and Circumstance

Sir Edward Elgar composed the famous commencement tune, also known as “Land of Hope and Glory” in 1901. At its England premier, the conductor proclaimed, “The people simply rose and yelled. I had to play it again – with the same result…” Today, this piece is played at graduation ceremonies all over the words as processionals and recessionals.

  • Caps and Gowns

The traditional graduation outfit is, of course, the cap and gown. Its use first began in the 12th Century. At that time, heating systems had not been created, so graduates were forced to try and keep warm during the ceremony. Scholars began wearing long robes with hoods to preserve their warmth. Before long, the century gown became the official attire of academics.

  • Throwing of the Caps

Anyone familiar with graduation ceremonies knows that once all of the graduates receive their diplomas, they proceed to throw their caps in the air – but why? It turns out this tradition was started in the Naval Academy in 1912. Prior to graduation, academy graduates had to serve two years in the fleet before being commissioned as Navy officers. The graduating class of 1912 was commissioned during their commencement ceremony and received their officers’ hats. Since their midshipmen hats were no longer needed, the graduates threw their hats into the air without having to worry about getting them back. The tradition caught on at other institutions and the action is now regarded as a symbolic gesture to signify the ending of a monumental chapter.

Our Lions Pride office intern, Kirsten, will be graduating from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point with a degree in business management. She spent nearly two years with our organization and will miss her dearly, but know that she has a bright future ahead. We’d like to wish her and all upcoming graduates congratulations and best wishes in all future endeavors. You did it!

In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb? We Don’t Think So.

march-in-like-a-lion

Wow, another month has come and gone, and the most unpredictable time of the year has officially arrived. As we write, the all-too-familiar white fluffy snow continues to fall, adding to our fresh piles. It looks like March is coming in like a lion so it will go out like a lamb, right?

As we all know, there is no shortage of catchy weather sayings:

“Red in the morning, sailor’s warning. Red at night, sailor’s delight.”
“Doors and drawers stick before a rain.”
“The sharper the blast, the sooner ‘tis past.”
“If spiders are many and spinning their webs. The spell will soon be dry.
“When your joints all start to ache, rainy weather is at stake.”

But are there are any truths to these sayings?

You may be surprised to learn that all of the listed folklores are true, except – you guessed it – our lion and lamb saying. Read through more true weather folklores.

We have all experienced Marches that began with wild snowstorms and ended with blue, clear skies, but there are no scientific facts that provide evidence to this being a valid claim. Of course, we can hope that March starts off cloudy and snowy, and then ends with warmth and sun, but the key word is hope. Sadly, this particular lion saying appears to be more of a rhyme than a weather predictor.

Fortunately, we can quickly come up with a lion saying that we know for a fact to be true. “Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.” Each year, Lions like you are making a difference in their communities all over the globe, and we have proof!

LCIF recently released their 2015-2016 Annual Report, where they announced that they received over $39.4 million in generous donations. The foundation then awarded 453 grants totaling over $45.2 million to support the work of Lions around the world. These grants made a positive impact on the lives of more than 44 million people. Now, that’s what we’d like to call making a difference!

On second thought, “In like a lion… out like a lamb” is obviously a false claim because Lions come in Lions, and come out like Lions, everyday of the year (regardless of the month.) From all of us at Lions Pride, thank you for all that you do and keep up the good work!

Black Friday Shopping Facts and Stats

Happy Thanksgiving! black-friday-saleToday is the day where we will eat too much turkey, enjoy all of the
traditional side dishes, indulge in homemade pie and tell our loved ones what we are most thankful for. Then tomorrow, the holiday shopping season will officially begin.

Although it seems like Black Friday has been around for ages, it is surprisingly a relatively new phenomenon that may or may not have changed our Thanksgiving traditions for the better. To kick off the (supposedly) biggest shopping day of the year, we’ve put together a list of eye-opening Black Friday statistics and facts.

  • The term, ‘Black Friday,’ was first introduced to describe the notorious crash of the US gold market on September 24, 1869.
  • In 2015, the average dollar amount spent by one person was $403.55. (Wow!)
  • A recent survey asked Black Friday shoppers how long they would be willing to wait in line for a good sale; the response was 2 ½ hours.
  • Many Black Friday “deals” aren’t actually bargains. Several Black Friday hot ticket items are originally priced with the future discount built in.
  • Black Friday is becoming extinct because many retailers are now open on Thursday. Wal-Mart broke the tradition in 2011 when they opened their doors Thanksgiving night, leaving other retailers racing to catch up.
  • Although many credit Black Friday as the largest shopping day of the year, it still comes in second place, following the Saturday before Christmas, so you may be mistaken if you feel that you are missing out if you opt not to shop.

It may be just us, but seeing all of these facts one after another, encourages to us stay home just a little longer rather than bundling up and going shopping. How about you? Do you plan on shopping on Black Friday, or will you stay in and enjoy the comforts of home?

However, you plan to spend your Thanksgiving weekend; Lions Pride wishes a safe and enjoyable holiday. We hope you have the chance to spend a bit of time to think about all the blessings of life. As always, we’re thankful for you!

Here at Lions Pride, we like to acknowledge unique holidays and facts about the Lions Pride Thank Youmonths that happen throughout the year that our readers may have not already heard about.

We’ve written about Earth Day, Diabetes Awareness Month and World Sight Day. This month, we get to talk about another fun holiday – National Volunteer Month.

It seems like the news that we ever hear about in the media is bad news? By celebrating National Volunteer Month, we get a chance to recognize the good that happens all over the world, but may go unnoticed.

Would you be able to guess how many volunteers there are in the United States? The number might more than you imagine! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 62 million Americans volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2013 and September 2014. Wow!

We think one of the best parts about volunteering is that you can individually serve a cause that you care about in whichever way you choose. Plus, whether you are able to volunteer for an hour or an entire day, every bit of time makes a difference in the eyes of the organization.

National Volunteer Month also gives us an opportunity to highlight one of our favorite events of the year. In seven short weeks, we will be holding our Annual Shoot. On Saturday, June 13, our 8th Annual Shoot will take place at Milford Hills in Johnson Creek. We are looking for volunteers to make this event another success.

Lions Pride Annual Shoot VolunteersOur volunteers hold many different roles throughout the day including shooting station attendants, raffle ticket sellers and registration workers. No experience is necessary, and everyone will receive lunch and/or dinner.

The Lions Pride Shoot is an event you won’t want to miss!

In the past, guests have chosen to join us for lunch and dinner and walk the course to see the shooters in action and breathe in the beautiful scenery. We’d love for you to join us.

To become a volunteer, please contact us directly by calling 715-677-7000 or emailing us at prideoffice@lionspride.org. You can also register as a shooter or sponsor, for a copy of our brochure click here. Thank you for your support!

“You know you are getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.” –Bob Hope

It’s everyone’s favorite day of the year, (well, most of us still enjoy our birthdays!) A day when we can think back on the year we just completed and daydream about what the next year holds. A day when strangers will wish you well and it’s easy to find a restaurant that will give you a dessert for free. It’s a day when we can all feel truly special.

We have an extra special birthday happening at our office tomorrow. Our Chairman Dewey Carl will be celebrating his day of birth.

In honor of this day, we thought it would be fun to compile a list of birthday facts that we can all appreciate, even if it’s not our special day!

Did you know…?

  • Out of every 23 people, there is a 50/50 chance that two will share the same birthday.
  • August is the most popular birthday month. About 9 percent of the world’s population is born in the eighth month of the year.
  • Birthday cards make up nearly 58 percent of all cards purchased in the United States.
  • The world’s largest birthday cake was made in 1989 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Fort Payne, Indiana. The cake weighed over 128,000 pounds.
  • You can find out what special events happened on your birthday by visiting http://www.mybirthdayfacts.com.

We know that it can be sometimes difficult to find the perfect present for a loved one. Instead of the typical birthday card or flowers, give them something that will really make an impact. Make a donation in honor of the birthday boy or girl to Lions Pride. They will know that your gift truly came from the heart and you will know that your gift helps preserve, protect and support the continuation of all WLF projects. Now that’s a birthday gift we can all agree on.

Happy birthday, Chairman Dewey Carl!
