Did you know that the first Saturday of every month is known as National Play Outside Day? This unofficial holiday gives families including kids, parents and grandparents a regular opportunity to get outside to play together. You may be wondering why we need a monthly occurrence to remind us to spend some time outdoors, but the fact is both kids and adults alike have stopped playing outside (and we’re not just talking about the time during these chilly winter months.)

One of the easiest ways you can improve the health of yourself and those around you is by spending a little more time outside. Here are a few important health benefits associated with getting out and enjoying nature at its finest:

  • You can find ways exercise without giving it much thought.
  • You can increase your Vitamin D intake, which is beneficial for your bones, blood cells and immune system.
  • You can improve your sleeping habits by regulating your internal clock.
  • You can enhance your creative problem-solving capabilities by refocusing your attention.
  • You can stay active and more easily manage a healthy weight.

Time outside may be on the decline, but it remains a core factor for our special campers in all of the summer programming at Wisconsin Lions Camp. In each session, children have the chance for a comprehensive outdoor program that includes everything from overnight camping, canoe and hiking trips, swimming, paddle boarding and more.

The goals, of course, are to assist each child in the development of self-confidence, interdependence and social skills, as well as help build upon their outdoor recreational skills and environmental awareness. The staff understands that there is no better way to observe everything that Mother Nature has to offer with a variety of fun, outdoor activities that encourage campers to continue playing outside – even after leaving camp.

We can all take a play out of the Wisconsin Lions Camp handbook by remembering to get out and play. We know that the frigid temperatures this weekend may not necessarily be conducive to enjoying a lot of time outside, but it will be the perfect time to plan your favorite outdoor winter activity when the weather warms back up.

If you know someone who could benefit from a trip to the Wisconsin Lions Camp, you can find additional program information and online applications on the Wisconsin Lions Camp website.

Can you believe only eight days remaining in the  2016-2017 Lionistic Year? It feels likeCurrent DGEsonly yesterday that we were welcoming the upcoming district governors. Then, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, our DGs made their way through their terms and added “Outgoing” to their titles.

Now, it’s time to welcome a new group! Next week, our DGEs will be meeting in Chicago to complete their intensive training seminar where they will learn about their new roles and responsibilities as leaders. The group will then participate in the highly anticipated 100th Annual Lions Club International Convention.

The seminar unofficially begins on Tuesday, June 27, with registration, a DGE and companion photo shoot, single district orientation and a welcome reception at Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Wednesday morning will kick off at 8:30 am with the opening ceremony followed by a general keynote session from Nick Vujicic, an Australian motivation speaker who was born with a rare disorder called tetra-amelia syndrome (the absence of arms and legs). Afterward, the group will take part in a companion session and three classroom sessions.

On Thursday morning, our DGEs will hear from First Vice President Dr. Naresh Aggarwal as well as Sister BK Shivani, an Indian spiritual teacher and inspirational speaker. The day will then hold another companion session and three more classroom sessions.

Then on Friday morning, the group will take part in general sessions about LCIF and New Service Framework, followed by the closing ceremony, classroom and goal setting sessions and the celebration banquet.

On behalf of all of us at Lions Pride, we’d like to wish all of our DGEs well on their journey to Chicago and their upcoming term. We know that you have an exciting and fulfilling adventure ahead. Thank you for your service!

April is National Community Service Month. When was the time you and your club organized a project that was close to your heart? If it seems like it’s later, rather than sooner, there’s never been a better time to start the planning process.Lions Helping Hand

To help guide you through the process, follow these steps from Lions Club International:

  1. Brainstorm a list of possible programs

You can find a need by asking yourself and your club the following questions:
    a. What do you like best about your community?
    b. What could use improving in the community?
    c. What kinds of resources are required to make the proposed improvements?

Identify and list three to five qualities and improvements.

  1. Designate committees

After coming up with your list of ideas, set up committees to research the projects further. Committee members should continue to brainstorm ideas for implementation, possible action steps and include other interested participants.

  2. Conduct research

Reach out to community contacts to learn more about the opportunity. Find out if they think the project will help the community and if they have ideas about how the project can be completed.

  3. Develop relationships with other community organizations

In many cases, two heads are better than one. Community organizations may already have completed substantial research about your project topic and have more ideas on how to accomplish the goal.

  4. Create a written plan

Projects with a written plan that includes lots of details are much more likely to get completed. Be sure to include the goals and objectives, time frame and necessary resources.

  5. Implement your plan

Involve your members and other interested participants throughout the project implementation phase. Don’t forget to keep everyone up-to-date on the progress and reward success. When the project is complete, take some time to review the entire planning process to determine what worked and what didn’t to improve the next project plan.

Lions Pride is always on the lookout to find Lions Clubs that are interested in supporting the Wisconsin Lions Camp and all other WLF projects. If you and your club are interested in learning more, contact us today to find out what Lions Pride is all about. You could even be featured in a future blog post! Let’s work together to preserve, provide and protect for Lions Camp and all other WLF statewide projects.

Happy Community Service Month!

Stick to Your New Year’s Resolution in 2016

Today marks the 365th day Happy New Yearof the year. You know what the means – it’s time to turn over a new leaf and find ways to improve yourself in the year ahead. Yes, we are talking about New Year’s Resolutions.

Approximately 40 to 45 percent of American adults make one of more resolutions each year, but how many of those actually stick by what they say? A study has found that:

  • Past the first week, 75 percent of resolution-makers are still going strong.
  • Past two weeks, the number drops slightly to 71 percent.
  • After one month, resolutions kept drops again to 64 percent.
  • Finally, after six months, only 46 percent of the original resolutions are maintained.

In other words, only half of all resolutions made in January continue until the end of June. Simply stating that you hope to improve isn’t enough to make the change. In 2016, keep your resolution by following these tips:

  1. Write down your goals

Those who write down their goals on a piece of paper are much more likely to succeed versus those who do not. Why? Because writing down your goal forces you to brainstorm an action plan and motivate you to take action. Learn more about the advantages of committing your goals to writing.

  2. Make one change at a time

The New Year inspires us all to want to make big changes. Self-improvement is always great; however, deciding to change too many bad habits at once can be overwhelming. If you resolve to stop smoking, start exercising and eat healthier, you are putting a lot of pressure on yourself. Instead, decide to focus on one resolution and work up to the others.

  3. Tell a friend or family

Talking to friends about your goals is an excellent way to build accountability. If you are working to spend more time with family in 2016, tell your family! There’s no doubt that they will hold you responsible for keeping your resolution. If possible, find a friend who shares your resolution and motivate one another. (Don’t worry; we’re not expecting you to share with all of your Facebook friends.)

  4. Take small steps

Resolutions are always challenging, but they are even more difficult when all you have is a large and seemingly impossible goal. Saying, “This year, I want to give more to my favorite charity” could mean writing a large check next December or it could mean making small donations throughout the year. Yes, you will accomplish the same objective, but which one are you more likely to notice?

Did you know that giving to Lions Pride is simpler than you can imagine? Many Pride supporters choose to simplify their giving by automating their monthly gift. Find out how you can automate your donation.

Remember that all improvements start with a decision to make a change. Make 2016 the year that you change your life for the better. We know you can do it!

There’s no question that 2015 was a spectacular year, but we’re ready to see what the New Year has in store for us. The Lions Pride office will be closed for the remainder of the week. Have a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve. See in 2016!
