Everyone has a favorite ingredient that they want to add to every meal. Many of us love butter, others adore pepper and lots of us cannot get enough garlic. If you’re looking for the last group of people, you will likely find them at this weekend’s garlic festival.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival is one of the most well-known summer food festivals in the country. Attendees enjoy full days of food and drink, live music and, of course, cooking competitions. The fun kicks off tomorrow Friday, July 26, at Christmas Hill in Gilroy, California.

One of the most notable parts of the festival is the world-famous Gourmet Alley. Visitors will have the chance to witness a smoking hot, flame-up show as the “Pyro-Chefs” prepare garlic-laced calamari and scampi in large iron skillets. They can then sample the final product, which also includes pasta con pesto, pepper steak, sausage and shrimp. Everyone knows the festival would not be complete without garlic bread and garlic fries.

If you think Gourmet Alley is the only place to find food, you are mistaken! Attendees will be able to find snacks all over the festival grounds. The committee thoroughly vets all vendors to feature the very best variety. Delicacies include garlic ice cream, quesadillas, kettle corn, ribs, corn on the cob, top sirloin and more. See the entire list of food and merchandise booth vendors.

Visitors can also watch exciting cooking competitions and expert food demonstrations. Celebrity chef appearances include Tom Colicchio, Gerron Hunt, Eddie G and Teresa Giudice.

The garlic entertainment will continue all weekend long with live music, shopping, the Miss Gilroy Festival Queen Pageant and art poster contest.

The Garlic Festival is put on each year by 4000 volunteers throughout the Gilroy area. Their efforts go to show what a passionate group of people can achieve when they work together. We witnessed similar magic last month at our Lions Pride Shoot. It’s truly amazing how events can come together after months of planning and preparation.

How do you feel about garlic in your food? Whether you love it or hate it, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Have a great weekend,
Lions Pride Staff & Board

cranberry-festThe leaves are beginning to change colors; the temperature continues to drop and everything is becoming pumpkin-spice flavored; yes, we think it’s safe to say that autumn is officially here!

Although we love summer here at Lions Pride, there is something very special about fall in Wisconsin. We think the primary reason may be because there are so many fun events taking place. Since today is the first day of fall, it’s time to celebrate! Review our list of fun events taking place this weekend around the state of Wisconsin:

  • Warrens Cranberry Fest – Participate in the world’s largest cranberry festival! Enjoy family fun with thousands of arts and crafts-type booths, cranberry harvest tours, huge parade and a cranberry recipe contest. Come for a very “berry good time!”
  • Copper Falls Fall Festival – Discover spectacular beauty at Copper Fall State Park in Mellen. Keep the kids in your life busy with t-shirt painting, pumpkin carving and apple cider making demonstrations. You’ll also get the chance to fill up on homemade treats from area vendors.
  • Beer and Bacon Festival – A little closer to our neck of the woods, Wausau Events is proud to present the 1st Annual Beer and Bacon Festival. Tickets are $35, and participants will be able to sample delicious beer and bacon from vendors around the state.
  • Annual Oktoberfest – Downtown Beloit Association is bringing back the 3rd Annual Oktoberfest. Join in the fun by sampling German beers and enjoying live bands and dance performances throughout the day. Tickets are $5 for adults, $1 for children ages 4-11; children 3 and younger are free.
  • Evening in the Village – Explore the Old World Wisconsin village at dusk in Eagle. Hours will be extended until 7 pm Saturday night only with lots of special activities planned.

There you have it – five of many events happening around our beautiful state. How do you plan to spend the first weekend of fall?

Rosholt FairIs it just us or does it seem like we blinked and all of a sudden it was September? We feel like we were just talking about Memorial Day, and now school is back in session and we are on the heels of Labor Day Weekend.

Although this weekend is unofficially known as the end of summer, we look forward to Labor Day because that means it’s time for the Portage County Fair that happens right here in Rosholt.

You might be surprised to learn that there is a long history associated with our fair. The planning began back in May 1921 when the Rosholt Advancement Association decided to host a picnic that would coincide with the Portage County Guernsey Breeders Association. The event was a success as became an official fair in 1922. The receipts of the first year totaled $228.76, and expenses were $226.46, leaving $2.30 for profits. The profit was a “decided success” and the event became known as the Rosholt Community Free Fair.

The fair takes place every year from Friday to Monday and is fun for the whole family. So many activities take place during the weekend including live music, a parade, hot air balloon rides, laser light show, mini tractor pulls, carnival rides, games and more. Of course, you’ll see award-winning animals from our local 4-H and FFA members. You can also learn about the town’s history in the Pioneer Museum. See the entire event calendar.

If you’re still looking for something to do for Labor Day Weekend, we encourage you to visit Rosholt and attend the 89th Annual Portage County Fair. You’re sure to find activities for the whole family.

The Lions Pride office will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. We wish you a safe, fun holiday!
