There’s no question that technology has been the driving force behind life during the pandemic. We’ve hosted Zoom meetings to conduct business, reconnected with friends using FaceTime and passed hours with one of the many streaming services. But as useful as technology can be, we can all probably agree that it is possible to take in too much.

If you’re looking for a reason to take a break from your screens, you’re in luck! Tomorrow, January 29, is National Puzzle Day. But before you stow away to the game closet to find your favorite puzzle, let’s celebrate with a few fun facts about one of the oldest past times:

• Many credit English engraver John Spilsbury as the inventor of the first puzzle around 1760. He used a sheet of hardwood to mount a world map, then cut around country borders with a handsaw.

• Spilsbury called these puzzles “dissected maps” and sold them as teaching tools to the wealthy, including King George III.

• The name jigsaw puzzle comes from the special saw used to cut the puzzles, but this name didn’t catch on until after the jigsaw was invented in the 1880s.

• Cardboard jigsaw puzzles had a boost in popularity during the Great Depression due to their low cost. A single puzzle could provide hours of entertainment for one family member and then be passed on to another to enjoy.

• Although many put together puzzles to decompress, others use puzzles to bring out their competitive sides. The World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship takes place in Spain and challenges the fastest jigsaw puzzlers from around the globe. The 2021 event will take place from September 25-26, 2021.

• Lastly, working on puzzles can be good for your health. A 2018 study shows that people who do jigsaw puzzles have longer lifespans and have a decreased chance of developing memory loss.

Is quietly working on a puzzle your idea of the perfect afternoon? If so, tell us your favorite part about jigsaw puzzles in the comments below.

Happy National Puzzle Day from Lions Pride!

We are nearing the end of another month, and it may be somewhat hard to believe that it is already time for the new Wisconsin Lions District Governors to meet. The entire MD27 Council of Governors is scheduled to meet this Saturday at the Hotel Mead & Conference Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

The first meeting of the 2020-2021 Lionistic Year will be an exciting one as it will be filled with lots of information and, for many of us, it will the first time that we are able to see friends in person. The day will begin with the call to order, introduction and opening remarks, the approval of the agenda and last July meeting minutes, followed by the ratification of all previous action and minutes.

Afterward, the new District Governors will hear brief reports from nearly 30 district chairpersons. Yes, we know that sounds like a lot of reports, but remember they only meet four times each year, so there’s plenty to discuss.

As the meeting continues the DGs will listen to MD27 and state committee reports. They will also hear from many of the State Lions organizations, including Lions Pride.

We are looking forward to seeing our fellow Lions in person but want to ensure everyone stays safe during the pandemic. At this time, we recommend the following safety tips:

  • At this time, it is believed that COVID-19 is spread mainly from person to person. Avoid close contact with others by maintaining a distance of at least six feet.
  • Consider wearing a cloth face cover when in the presence of others, just in case the social distance is hard to maintain.
  • Remember to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds.)

We are thrilled to be able to see the friendly faces of friends, even if they are partially covered by masks. We know there are smiles underneath. We’d like to wish all of our new DGs a safe, productive weekend and a successful year!

It may be hard to believe, but the Lions camping season wrapped up nearly two weeks,Image result for wisconsin lions foundationunofficially putting an end to the 2018 Lionistic Year. Do you know what that means? It’s time to start thinking about 2019!

This Saturday, September 15, the WLF Board of Directors will hold their first meeting of the New Year. During their meeting, the members will look at various service projects, work in their committees, and prepare their reports for the full Board Meeting, Lions Pride, will also present a report to the full Board and LPEF President will be presenting the second check of the year to WLF President, Jo Marson. Their day will be filled with camaraderie and an exciting new project, and the spirit of Lions.

Although Lions Pride will not be reporting to the board meeting until later on in the day, we will be hard at work over at the office, preparing for our annual newsletter. We will need to stuff, label and stamp over 2500 envelopes. If you have an extra hand, we’d love your help! We will begin at 8:30 am and work until all envelopes are ready to be mailed. We understand that any number with 4 digits is automatically overwhelming, but we can tell you that there’s no better feeling than seeing boxes of newsletters ready for the post office. All volunteers will be rewarded with coffee and gratitude.

If your loved one will be participating in the WLF Board Meeting on Saturday morning, we’d love your company at the Lions Pride office. Of course, all volunteers are welcome. You know what they say, many hands make for light work.

See you Saturday!

June has arrived! The trees are blooming, the birds WI Lions Campare singing and winter feels like nothing more than a cold, distant memory.

While we may only be halfway through the year of 2017, the 2016-2016 Lionistic Year is coming to a close; that means it’s time for our current Council of Governors to start handing the reigns to our the DGEs. Saturday marks the first full weekend of the summer at Lions Camp. The DGEs will be gearing up for their new roles at this weekend’s orientation.

The fun starts on Friday afternoon at 4 pm with initial Council Chair Training presented by CC Shawn Redington, IPID Karla Harris and PID Mark Hintzmann. Immediately following, the elected officials will receive a camp tour and meal from the WLF Directors. The night ends with WLF orientation history and current project overview.

On Saturday, the District Governor Elects will learn about the training at the International Convention and receive more information about the several projects happening within Wisconsin Lions. They will hear from Lions Club International Foundation, the Global Members Team, Wisconsin Lions Eyebank and, of course, Lions Pride.

The day will then wrap up with the council meeting schedule, locations, format and committee action items. The next two days are going to move quickly for the incoming Governors and will begin to prepare them for the year ahead.

Lions Pride is looking forward to seeing all of the District Governor Elects this weekend, and sharing our message about Pride. We’d like to wish all of the new DGEs a nice weekend; we know you are going to be great in your new roles!
