Let’s play a guessing game! We’ll use a few characteristics to describe a loved one and we want to see if you can determine who it is we’re talking about. This special someone likely has four legs; can make you smile even after the roughest day and is always there for you – both literally and figuratively. Who are we talking about? Your pet, of course!

This Saturday, February 20, Is National Love Your Pet Day, a day to celebrate your most loyal companion. In honor of National Pet Day, we’ve compiled a list of interesting fun facts that you might not already know about your best friend:

  • You may have heard that yawning is contagious, but did you know that it can actually be triggered between species? Research shows that dogs are more likely to yawn if they see their owner yawn first.
  • Like a human fingerprint, a dog’s nose print is unique.
  • You may have noticed that dogs often curl up in a ball when sleeping. This evolutionary habit is thought to be rooted in their DNA. When dogs primarily slept outside in the wild, they would sleep in a ball to conserve their body heat as well as to protect their vital organs from predators.
  • Believe it or not, dogs really do have a sense of time. They get used to regular routines and know when it’s time to eat or go for a walk.
  • Despite popular belief, domesticated cats are more closely related to a puma or lynx rather than a lion or tiger.
  • Cats have the ability to rotate their ears up to 180 degrees.
  • Human brains and cat brains have a lot in common. In fact, studies show that the structure of a cat’s brain is 90 percent similar to ours.
  • Once cats reach maturity, they typically only meow at humans. Meanwhile, they will hiss, purr and spit at other cats.
  • Rabbits have similar grooming patterns to cats. They clean themselves by licking their paws.
  • Goldfish can see more colors than a human. In addition to red, blue and yellow, they can see a fourth color which allows them to see ultraviolet light.

Whether you own a dog, cat or another special creature, there is just no denying the positive impact they have on our lives. Be sure to take the weekend to give them a little extra loving.

Protect Your Pet with Proper Identification

lifetime? Fortunately, having the right identification in place for your furry companion can increase its chance of being returned home. No ID? No problem – as the third week of April is Pet ID Week, now is the perfect time to give Fido or Fluffy proper identification.

Let’s start with the collar tag. First, does your pet have one? If yes, you’re off to a great start, but you need to make sure it includes all pertinent information. The most important piece is your telephone number. With that simple 10-digital number, your dog or cat will most likely be returned to you. The pet’s name and address can also be helpful but are not always necessary.

Tip: If it’s been a while since you’ve examined your four-legged friend’s collar tag, be sure that it’s not too worn and easy to read.

Next on the list is licensing. Dogs have an added advantage over cats in this category as many municipalities require dogs over a certain age to be registered with the county. Check with your local officials to learn more about your area laws.

Lastly, one of the best ways to protect your pet is by microchipping. A microchip is a small, electronic that is enclosed within a glass cylinder. The chip itself is only the size of a grain of rice and is placed under the skin with a hypodermic needle. The microchip is activated by a scanner and transmits an identification number. When a lost pet is taken to a shelter or veterinarian clinic, one of the first things they do is scan the animal for a microchip. If they find a chip, and it has accurate information, they can quickly find the owner. Read through more FAQs about the microchipping process.

To many of us, pets are not just animals that we feed and care for; they become an extension of our families. Keep them easily identifiable so if you ever do get separated, you will be able to help them find their way home.

Happy Pet ID Week from Lions Pride!

Preparing Your Family for an Emergency

If the last two weeks have taught us anything, it’s that you never know when disaster willkit_supplies strike. In the past twenty days, we’ve seen forest fires to the west, an earthquake in Mexico and hurricanes to the south. With tragedy affecting families all over the country and the world, now is the time to send resources to those in need and prepare ourselves for our own emergencies that may come up.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly half of all US adults do not have a plan in place in the event of an emergency. Would you fall into that category? If so, there’s never been a better time to think ahead by developing an emergency supply kit. Below is a list of items that you’ll need:

  • At least a 3-day supply of food and water

You likely won’t have time to run to the grocery store before a possible emergency, which is why it’s so important to have a supply readily available. Plan on going through one gallon of water per person, per day. When stocking food, be sure to find items that are easy to make and won’t spoil like canned items and dry pastas. (Don’t forget about your furry friends; make sure that you have enough food and water for each of your pets!)

  • Manual can opener
  • Basic kitchen utensils
  • At least a 3-day supply of all medication
  • Personal care items

If a disaster occurs, you may not have the luxury of taking a hot shower, but you’ll want to make sure you have the sanitary essentials like soap, baby wipes, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

  • First aid kit
  • Emergency blanket
  • Multipurpose tool
  • Flashlight
  • Cell phone with chargers

In today’s world, cell phones have replaced radios for many people. If you plan to receive emergency updates with your mobile phone, you’ll want to stay charged up and ready. A powerbank could save the day, if you lose electricity.

  • Copies of important documents like insurance policies and other vital records

Of course, emergencies are not always predictable so you’ll need to make sure all of these important documents stay safe. Consider investing in a fireproof lock box, a safety deposit box or a three-ring binder with sleeves.

  • Extra cash
  • Area maps
  • Extra set of house keys or car keys

This is a preliminary list that you should utilize to get your emergency supply kit started. Unfortunately, one-size does not always fit all; you may need additional supplies to ensure your entire family is ready. For children, this may include games and activities; for pets, your kit may include transport items and cleaning supplies. Please visit this link for a complete list of items to fill up your emergency preparedness kit.

Here at Lions Pride, we don’t think there is such a thing as being too prepared. While we understand that it may be time consuming initially, the benefits definitely outweigh the costs. Take the time to prepare now and thank yourself later. Stay safe out there!

Safety Tips for July 4th

4th of July, boating, Independence Day, lions pride, pets, safety, sunscreen, swimming, tips, traveling

2014 marks the 185th anniversary of America’s freedom. The 4th of July is one of the most fun days of the year, a time to enjoy the beautiful, summer weather with family and friends. However, if you’re not careful, it can also be a day full of hazards. Stay safe this Independence Day with these tips:

  • Give yourself enough time for travel

Holidays always mean busy streets and highways. There are thousands of families across the country traveling out of town for special events. It’s always a good idea to leave earlier than usual to ensure a timely arrival.  View a short AAA travel safety video here.

  • Have a fire extinguisher available

We all enjoy barbecues and fireworks displays, but grills and fireworks mean there are more fire hazards than usual. Be prepared for all uncertainties with a fire extinguisher nearby.

  • Boat safely

July 4 is another busy day on rivers and lakes. You may not be used to the high traffic out on the water. Review boat safety tips to keep everyone, including other boaters and swimmers, safe.

  • Don’t forget the sunscreen

Remember, a sunny day isn’t the only time you should protect your skin. You can still get sunburned on a cloudy day. Rub on the SPF before you leave and house and bring the bottle along to reapply after 2 to 4 hours.

  • Leave Fido at home

July 5 is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters because dogs panicked during the firework display. Many dogs are afraid of the loud noises that occur on the 4th of July and they “retreat” to safety. We understand pets are part of the family, but in this case, your best bet may be to keep your dog at home.  For other holiday weekend pet safety tips, click here.

The Lions Pride Office will be closed on Friday, July 4. We wish you a safe, enjoyable Independence Day!
