best friend, cats, colors, companion, dogs, february, grooming, lions pride, meow, national love your pet day, nose print, pets, puma, saturday, smile, tiger, wild, yawn

Let’s play a guessing game! We’ll use a few characteristics to describe a loved one and we want to see if you can determine who it is we’re talking about. This special someone likely has four legs; can make you smile even after the roughest day and is always there for you – both literally and figuratively. Who are we talking about? Your pet, of course!

This Saturday, February 20, Is National Love Your Pet Day, a day to celebrate your most loyal companion. In honor of National Pet Day, we’ve compiled a list of interesting fun facts that you might not already know about your best friend:

  • You may have heard that yawning is contagious, but did you know that it can actually be triggered between species? Research shows that dogs are more likely to yawn if they see their owner yawn first.
  • Like a human fingerprint, a dog’s nose print is unique.
  • You may have noticed that dogs often curl up in a ball when sleeping. This evolutionary habit is thought to be rooted in their DNA. When dogs primarily slept outside in the wild, they would sleep in a ball to conserve their body heat as well as to protect their vital organs from predators.
  • Believe it or not, dogs really do have a sense of time. They get used to regular routines and know when it’s time to eat or go for a walk.
  • Despite popular belief, domesticated cats are more closely related to a puma or lynx rather than a lion or tiger.
  • Cats have the ability to rotate their ears up to 180 degrees.
  • Human brains and cat brains have a lot in common. In fact, studies show that the structure of a cat’s brain is 90 percent similar to ours.
  • Once cats reach maturity, they typically only meow at humans. Meanwhile, they will hiss, purr and spit at other cats.
  • Rabbits have similar grooming patterns to cats. They clean themselves by licking their paws.
  • Goldfish can see more colors than a human. In addition to red, blue and yellow, they can see a fourth color which allows them to see ultraviolet light.

Whether you own a dog, cat or another special creature, there is just no denying the positive impact they have on our lives. Be sure to take the weekend to give them a little extra loving.

Happy Love Your Pet Day from Lions Pride!

Is it just us, or has this week been downright autumn-like? The low 70-degree days we’ve been seeing has been a welcome change, compared to the previous excruciatingly hot weather. The cooler temperatures allow us to make a couple pleasant changes, like turning off the air conditioner, opening back up the windows and baking something delightful in the oven.

Last Saturday, August 1, was Homemade Pie Day. Although we may be a few days behind, we don’t think it’s too late to celebrate. Let’s commemorate America’s favorite homemade dessert with fun facts to raise your Pie-Q:

  • Apple pie is often promoted as an American staple, but the first written Apple Pie Recipe is actually believed to have been written in England in 1381.
  • Pie is most commonly known as a dessert, but up until the 19th Century, fruit pies were seen as a popular breakfast item.
  • In 2008, Crisco and the American Pie Council surveyed Americans on their favorite types of pieces:
    • 19% prefer apple pie.
    • 13% prefer pumpkin pie.
    • 12% prefer pecan pie.
    • 10% prefer banana cream pie.
    • 9% prefer cherry pie.
  • 1 out of 5 people admits having eaten an entire pie by themselves.
  • Not all pies were not just for eating. The wet bottom molasses pie known as the Shoo-fly Pie was used to attract flies from the kitchen, though the origin may never be completely known.
  • There is a theory that your favorite pie is an indicator of your personality. If you love:
    • Apple pie, then you are independent, realistic and compassionate.
    • Pecan pie, then you are thoughtful and analytical.
    • Chocolate pie, then you are loving.
    • Pumpkin pie, then you are funny and independent.

What is your favorite type of homemade pie? Let us know in the comments below!

Take this cooler weather as an opportunity to spend some time in the kitchen, making your favorite pie. Happy Homemade Pie from Lions Pride!

We are nearing the end of another month, and it may be somewhat hard to believe that it is already time for the new Wisconsin Lions District Governors to meet. The entire MD27 Council of Governors is scheduled to meet this Saturday at the Hotel Mead & Conference Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

The first meeting of the 2020-2021 Lionistic Year will be an exciting one as it will be filled with lots of information and, for many of us, it will the first time that we are able to see friends in person. The day will begin with the call to order, introduction and opening remarks, the approval of the agenda and last July meeting minutes, followed by the ratification of all previous action and minutes.

Afterward, the new District Governors will hear brief reports from nearly 30 district chairpersons. Yes, we know that sounds like a lot of reports, but remember they only meet four times each year, so there’s plenty to discuss.

As the meeting continues the DGs will listen to MD27 and state committee reports. They will also hear from many of the State Lions organizations, including Lions Pride.

We are looking forward to seeing our fellow Lions in person but want to ensure everyone stays safe during the pandemic. At this time, we recommend the following safety tips:

  • At this time, it is believed that COVID-19 is spread mainly from person to person. Avoid close contact with others by maintaining a distance of at least six feet.
  • Consider wearing a cloth face cover when in the presence of others, just in case the social distance is hard to maintain.
  • Remember to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds.)

We are thrilled to be able to see the friendly faces of friends, even if they are partially covered by masks. We know there are smiles underneath. We’d like to wish all of our new DGs a safe, productive weekend and a successful year!

Do you have meal plans set for Saturday? If not, you might be so inclined to indulge in your favorite fast food. Saturday, November 16, is National Fast Food Day. If you’ve been craving a juicy hamburger with a side of fries, there’s no better time to hop in the car and enjoy a quick meal on the go.

“Fast food,” of course, is a blanket term for any type of food that is made and prepared for a customer in a short amount of time. The phrase first appeared in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 1951 but has an extensive history. Read more from the History of Fast Food.

As you know, fast food first began as burgers, fries and shakes, but now includes everything from breakfast sandwiches to Chinese food. Today, we’re celebrating the unofficial holiday with a list of interesting, fun facts:

  • Did you know that Chick-fil-A is famous for its restaurant lemonade? So much so, they’ve become the largest Sunkist lemon buyer. Each year, they sell about 121 million cups of lemonade, which requires them to purchase approximately 250 million lemons.
  • You may be surprised to learn that Subway, not McDonald’s, is the largest fast food chain in the world. Subway has an estimated 24,000 stores in the United States and 42,000 stores worldwide, which is 17% more than its highest competitor, McDonald’s.
  • Before kale became a popular health food item, Pizza Hut was the largest purchaser. The fast food didn’t use the leafy greens for the pizzas but instead to decorate their salad bars.
  • You may have heard that Dunkin Donuts coffee is served fresh, but do you know how fresh? According to the national coffee chain, if coffee doesn’t get used within 18 minutes, the staff will discard and brew a new carafe.
  • Wendy’s is the only fast food chain that sells baked potatoes on the side. Each week, the popular chain sells approximately one million baked potatoes.
  • Did you know the delicious cinnamon scent you experience when strolling through a shopping mall is fabricated? It’s true. Cinnabon entices shoppers by baking empty cookie sheets covered in their exclusive sugar and cinnamon mixture every 30 minutes. Talk about sneaky!

Will you observe National Fast Food Day? If so, where will you go? We’d love to hear in the comments below.

Whether you prefer a burger and fries, fried chicken or pizza, we hope you enjoy this fun concocted holiday. Happy National Fast Food Day from Lions Pride!

Are you looking for something to do this weekend? If so, you might be interested in finding out that Saturday, September 28, is National Drink Beer Day. We weren’t able to track the origin of the unofficial holiday, but we’re sure that many Wisconsinites would agree you don’t need an excuse to enjoy an ice-cold pint of your favorite brew.

To celebrate National Drink Beer Day, we thought we could come into the weekend with a few fun facts about the world’s oldest beverage of choice:

  • Beer brewing and drinking predates human history.
  • Beer Soup was a typical breakfast choice for people in medieval Europe.
  • Although there are hundreds of different kinds of styles of beers, they all fall into two primary categories, ales and lagers. Their differentiating factors come back to the type of yeast and how it ferments during the brewing process.
  • Munich’s most popular event, Oktoberfest, originally began as a celebration of the 1810 marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig.
  • Beer is the third-most popular drink in the world, following water and tea. It is worth noting; however, the most popular alcoholic beverage of choice.
  • Although Wisconsin is often known as the top drinking state, is actually #5. The most beer drinking per capita takes place in New Hampshire (as of 2017.)
  • If you’re looking for a craft beer, you will be happy to learn that most Americans live within 10 miles of a craft brewery.
  • The most expensive state to buy a beer may be Tennessee, which has the highest state excise taxes in the country.
  • Milwaukee is known as the beer capital of the world, as its home to a few of the most significant American brewers – Miller, Schlitz, Pabst and Blatz. The city also has a large German population.

If you plan to observe National Drink Beer Day this Saturday, please remember to do so responsibly. The Lions Pride Board and Staff would like to wish you a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Screen Shot 2019-06-05 at 7.21.07 PM3, 2, 1… Shoot! We know that it may be hard to believe, but we are only days away from our biggest event of the year. Each year for the past 12 years, we’ve held the Lions Pride Shoot at Milford Hills in Johnson Creek.

Our sporting clays fundraiser has become our most popular event that takes place on the second weekend in June. Both Lions and non-Lions come together to enjoy a day out in the beautiful rolling hills of Southern Wisconsin to support Lions Pride.

The day begins with an early lunch, followed by a challenging course with games and door prizes. After shooters have finished the course, they wind down from their action-packed day with cold beer, a live auction and delicious dinner. The Pride Shoot is one of the most, unique and successful fundraisers that take place for the Lions Pride Endowment Fund.

Although the Lions Pride Shoot is a one-day event, the staff has actually been planning for months. A lot of tiny details go into the overall preparation of the fundraiser, including recruiting participants, finding sponsors, collecting both door prizes and auction items, coordinating all of the day’s events with the Milford Hills staff and recruiting volunteers. Now, like the blink of an eye, the final week is upon us.

We’re continually being reminded of Dewey Carl’s spirit, but it’s even more present in the day leading up to the shoot because it was an event that he always looked forward to attending. In honor of our late chairman, we have always challenged ourselves to make each year’s fundraiser even better than the last.

As we diligently work to finish up the last details of the event, we’d like to take a moment to thank our donors, sponsors, shooters and volunteers. We know first-hand that it takes a village of people to create an enjoyable event, and we don’t know where we’d be without their support.

See you on Saturday!

that pizza is an American favorite. If you are looking for a reason not to cook on Saturday, we have the perfect excuse – National Pizza Day.

To commemorate the unofficial holiday, we’ve compiled a list of pizza-related trivia that are sure to get your mouth-watering:

  • The first mention of the word, “pizza” was found in a manuscript in Gaeta, a small Italian town, in 997 AD. Talk about history!
  • The first documented pizzeria was opened in Naples in the late 1800s.
  • Although the term dates back centuries, pizza didn’t become popular in the United States until after WWII. Stories say that soldiers stationed in Italy took to liking pizza and brought the idea back home to make it one of the most popular dishes.
  • The first American Pizzeria was Lombardi’s in New York City. The company started as a grocery store but started selling pizzas in 1905. This introduction led to an explosion of pizzerias around New York City.
  • Currently, there are over 9,000 pizzerias in the state of New York alone.
  • According to the USDA, a majority of Americans consume at least one slice of pizza each month.
  • Most people eat pizza on Saturday night.
  • Pepperoni is the most popular pizza topping, followed by sausage.
  • Pizza delivery increase by approximately 39 percent on Super Bowl
  • According to Pizza Connoisseur Craig Priebe, 69 percent of Americans prefer thin crust pizza.
  • The world’s largest pizza was 122 feet long and 22 feet in diameter.
  • Pizzerias make up about 17 percent of all US restaurants.

If you’re looking for a fun way to spend this Saturday night, consider throwing a pizza party and making homemade pizzas, or take a trip to your favorite local pizzeria. We can almost guarantee that no one will decline your invitation to celebrate.

Happy National Pizza Day from Lions Pride!

Ready, aim, fire! We know it’s hard to believe, but we are only days away from thisTichigan Lions week’s 11th Annual Pride Shoot, happening once again at Milford Hills Hunt Club in Johnson Creek.

Sporting clays shooting is often called “golf with a shotgun,” but unlike golf, shooting sporting clays is as fun for beginners as it is for seasoned experts (we’re sure golfers would agree!)

Our sporting clays fundraiser is our most popular event that takes place on the second weekend in June. Both Lions and non-Lions come together to enjoy a day on the course in the beautiful rolling hills of Southern Wisconsin to support Lions Pride.

The day consists of an early breakfast followed by a challenging 22-round course with games and door prizes. After shooters have finished the course, they celebrate with beer, auction and delicious supper. The Pride Shoot is one of the most, unique and successful fundraisers that takes place for our organization.

Although we still have a lot of work ahead of us, we are eagerly anticipating Saturday’s arrival. We are always reminded of Dewey’s spirit, but it’s even more present this time of year as he so looked forward to the annual shoot. We feel we have a personal responsibility to make the upcoming event even more rewarding than the last.

We’d like to thank all of our donors, sponsors and volunteers for all of your support – both leading up to, during and after the shoot. We know firsthand that it takes a village to create and implement a successful event, and the Pride Shoot would not be what it is without all of your help.

See you Saturday!

Make the Most of Your Daylight Savings

challenge, daylight savings, family, friends, game night, life, lions pride, meal, movie, november, ritual, saturday, sleep, time, to do, tradition

Doesn’t it seem like only yesterday that we were setting our clocks an hour ahead, and Alarm Clockspringing forward? While it may be hard to believe, this Saturday, November 4, we’ll be setting them back for the end of Daylight Savings.

We all know that life moves quickly. Although the days may sometimes go slowly, the years seem to move at hyperspeed. As a result, it’s always a challenge to get everything done that makes our ongoing To Do Lists. But since we are getting 60 minutes back in our day, we think Daylight Savings is the time to celebrate! Here are a few ideas to help you start planning:

  1. Create a new ritual

It’s always a great time to create a new ritual or tradition. Treat yourself to a night in with your favorite movie, create an extravagant meal or host a family game night. Why not spend the evening doing something you enjoy or time with those you love.

  1. Tackle an item on your To Do List

We always have expectations that we set for ourselves, but unfortunately, these expectations are not always realistic or may fall behind other priorities. If you’ve had a certain task that you’ve been waiting to cross off your list, consider spending your extra hour to complete the job (or at least make some headway.) Although it may not be as glamorous as planning a fun activity, we can almost guarantee you’ll take some pressure off yourself.

  1. Catch up with a friend

Rick Warren has said, “Time is your most precious gift because you only have a set amount of it. You can make more money, but you can’t make more time. When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you’ll never get back. Your time is your life. That is why the greatest gift you can give someone is your time.”

We all know that it can be challenging to keep up with friends, especially if they don’t live nearby. Fortunately though, thanks to technology, you don’t have to be close to stay close. Consider spending part of your Saturday night by catching up with a loved one either by phone or email. In our opinion, there’s no better way to spend time than with someone you love.

  1. Sleep

Of course, this item needed to be added to the list! If all else fails, add an extra hour of sleep to your Saturday night. Who couldn’t use 60 more minutes of ZZZs?

Life moves quickly so it’s important to we take advantage of every opportunity to use it wisely. How do you plan to spend your extra hour?

Happy Daylight Savings from Lions Pride!
