“Everybody can be great because everyone can serve.” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Each January, we honor and celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1983, Legislation marked the birthday of Dr. King as a federal holiday. But in 1994, Congress designated the holiday as a national day of service. Each year, on the third Monday of January, we are all encouraged to look at Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthdate as a “day on, not a day off.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. In 1948, he received a BA degree from Morehouse College, at the age of 19. He was awarded a BD degree after three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary.

Shortly after, he became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He was always a strong advocate of civil rights, so he joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as a member of the executive committee. In early December 1955, he accepted leadership as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott lasted a total of 382 days. On December 21, 1956, the Supreme Court of the United States declared bus segregation as unconstitutional. From that point on, people of all races rode the bus together as equals.

In 1957, he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a newly created organization that was formed to provide leadership for the civil rights movement. In the next eleven years, Dr. King would travel over six million miles and give over 2500 speeches. Meanwhile, he wrote five books as well as several articles and led enormous peaceful protests. He may be most known for leading the 1963 march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people and delivering his “I Have A Dream” speech. During his lifetime, he was arrested more than 25 times, awarded five honorary degrees and was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1968, while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, he was shot. He died on April 4.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all. The Day of Service is intended for engaging in community action that works to solve social problems. Service has an incredible ability to unite people of all ages and backgrounds while building stronger communities.

Honor the memory of Dr. King on Monday, January 21, by choosing to serve. Looking for a new service project? You need to see the Lions Club’s complete list of ideas for families. What project will you and your club start next? We’d love to hear in the comments below.

Happy MLK Day of Service from Lions Pride!

Forum week is officially here! Each year, Lions Club Members from all over North America come together for three days of fellowship to train, connect and get inspired. Later on today and into tomorrow, Wisconsin Lions and Lionesses will be in their company as they head down to the Buggy Capital of the World, Columbus, to attend the 2018 USA/Canada Leadership Forum.

For the next 72 hours, Lions will take part is over 80 seminars to touch on topics such as:

  • promoting service through social media
  • adding diabetes to the LCI Service Framework
  • overcoming the fear of public speaking
  • the power of storytelling
  • the ins and outs of chairing projects

See the entire seminar schedule here. The biggest challenge will be deciding which seminars to attend. Consider splitting the duties with other club members and regrouping later.

In addition to education-rich seminars, other special events will be taking place over the weekend. Lions will also have the opportunity to participate in the Strides Walk, observe a Lions University graduation and hear from incredible keynote speakers. We’re especially excited to hear from John Pinero who will be playing the role of legendary coach, Vince Lombardi. He will aim to inspire us as Lombardi inspired the Green Bay Packers. (Don’t be afraid to flaunt your hometown team spirit with green and gold apparel!)

Finally, Lions will have to make sure they take some time to explore Columbus. As the largest city in Ohio, Columbus is not without plenty of entertainment and restaurant options. A few of the most popular attractions include the Pearl Market, the Brewery District and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

There’s a reason why Lions look forward to forum weekend, year after year. The event has something for everyone – education, networking, site seeing and more.

From all of us at Lions Pride, we’d like to wish all leadership forum attendees safe travels as they make their way south. We can’t wait to hear about your experience when you get home!

It may be hard to believe, but the Lions camping season wrapped up nearly two weeks,Image result for wisconsin lions foundationunofficially putting an end to the 2018 Lionistic Year. Do you know what that means? It’s time to start thinking about 2019!

This Saturday, September 15, the WLF Board of Directors will hold their first meeting of the New Year. During their meeting, the members will look at various service projects, work in their committees, and prepare their reports for the full Board Meeting, Lions Pride, will also present a report to the full Board and LPEF President will be presenting the second check of the year to WLF President, Jo Marson. Their day will be filled with camaraderie and an exciting new project, and the spirit of Lions.

Although Lions Pride will not be reporting to the board meeting until later on in the day, we will be hard at work over at the office, preparing for our annual newsletter. We will need to stuff, label and stamp over 2500 envelopes. If you have an extra hand, we’d love your help! We will begin at 8:30 am and work until all envelopes are ready to be mailed. We understand that any number with 4 digits is automatically overwhelming, but we can tell you that there’s no better feeling than seeing boxes of newsletters ready for the post office. All volunteers will be rewarded with coffee and gratitude.

If your loved one will be participating in the WLF Board Meeting on Saturday morning, we’d love your company at the Lions Pride office. Of course, all volunteers are welcome. You know what they say, many hands make for light work.

See you Saturday!

Thousands of people throughout Wisconsin haveSam Kochel pro tem supported the Lions free service programs by participating in local fundraisers and activities, but over the course of the last two decades, expenses for Lions Camp and all WLF statewide projects have risen dramatically. Lions Pride was created to counteract these increasing costs by working to preserve, protect and provide for the future of Lions Camp and all WLF projects. Read the entire story here.

Each year Lions Pride makes two disbursements of funds to the Wisconsin Lions Foundation from the Lions Pride Endowment Fund based on the interest. The amounts are based on market values and ultimately determined by the LPEF Board of Directors.

Last week, we were happy to deliver our first gift of 2017. Our president pro tem, PCC Sam Kochel, presented a check for $40,000 to WLF President, Tom Mueller, at the March 25th WLF board meeting.

We are proud to report that all WLF projects received funds with this donation. The lions share was designated for Lions Camp, and the remainder went to the eyeglass recycling center, the hearing project, children & adult vision screening and diabetes education.

With this single donation, Lions Pride is providing 48 kids a week at Lions Camp this summer. Wow! We could not do it without our generous donors.

We will be making the second disbursement of additional funds in September. Consider donating to Lions Pride to help us create a sustainable future for the Lions Camp and all WLF statewide projects. If there is a project that holds a special place in your heart, be sure to designate it! All designated donations are guaranteed to go towards the project of choice.

We can’t thank our donors enough for their continued support.

It’s that time again; time for the USA/Canada Leadership Forum. lions-100th-anniversaryLast fall, we were fortunate to attend the 2015 Forum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and, we are attending again this year, in Omaha, Nebraska.

For the past 39 years, Lions from all over North America come together to participate in the largest and greatest Lions Club Leadership Training Event. Over the course of the next three days, Lions will have the opportunity to take part in dozens of leadership seminars, browse the expansive exhibitor hall, listen to inspiring speakers and (re)connect with friends.

The 2016 Forum will be slightly different than the past conferences because there will be a primary focus on preparing for the Lions Club 100th Anniversary. If you recall, to celebrate our milestone anniversary, we, as Lions, have been challenged in accomplishing 100 million acts of service. In addition to participating in several of the 60+ seminars, Forum Participants are invited to partake in three service projects representing four service campaigns:

Engaging Our Youth

Sharing the Vision

Relieving the Hunger

Protecting the Environment

We can’t wait to participate in another weekend of learning and fun with the arguably the greatest company – thousands of Lions!

On behalf of Lions Pride, we’d like to wish all of our traveling friends, safe travels, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at the forum.

Long-time Lions know that we are entering an exciting time of the year. If you’re a Dignity. Harmony. Humanity.newcomer, you may not know that October is the beginning of our fall convention line-up. For the next few weeks, we are going to be traveling to districts across the state to talk about all things Lions Pride.

This weekend, we are going to be headed to Wausau for the District 27-C1 Convention at Howard Johnson’s Hotel and Convention Center. This particular convention is the first of ten district conventions in MD27.

The convention will kick off Friday night with C1’s Annual WLF Live Auction. Generous donors have donated fantastic items that are up for raffle. The proceeds of the event will go towards WLF projects and programs.

Saturday morning, we’ll get an early start with the Strides Walk for Diabetes. The walk/run will begin at 7 am and will be held indoors (so your excuse that it’s just too cold is invalid!). The event will promote diabetes awareness as well as the importance of healthy exercise.

The rest of the day will be filled with educational seminars to help expand your knowledge of the LCI organization and strengthen yourself as a Lion or Lioness.

If you or another member of your club has not yet attended a district convention, we strongly encourage you to register for an upcoming event. There is no better way to learn about area service projects, improve your leadership skills or meet other passionate Lions than at a district convention. The information shared at these conferences adds to the success of every participating member, which will then strengthen the club.

Lions Pride is looking forward to seeing both new and familiar faces at this weekend’s convention! Will you be in attendance?
