Mother Nature may have been giving us mixed signals this week, but we are only days away from the Spring Equinox. We know that the fresh powder on the ground makes it seem like we are a long way off, but here’s how we know the new season is fast approaching:

The Sound of Birds

As we write this post, we are being serenaded by the sound of chirping birds. Yes, we may have seen cardinals and robins during the cold, winter months, but we can now look forward to seeing the ducks, sparrows, songbirds and other feathered friends again.

The Upcoming Forecast

Although today’s blustery weather makes it feel colder than it actually is; however, we are currently experiencing above normal temperatures. Local meteorologists are calling for sunny weather and over 50-degree temps. If this trend continues, March will definitely be going out like a lamb.

More Daylight

Many of us don’t much care for the turning of the clocks, but once Daylight Savings Time arrives, we need to remember that we are gifted with more sunlight and longer days. Tonight’s sunset is scheduled for 7:08 pm.

Baseball Season is Back

There’s no question that COVID-19 impacted all areas of life last spring, including sports. The baseball season didn’t start until late July 2020, but this year appears to be back on track. Spring training is well underway, and the MLB is planning a full 162-game season starting on April 1.

The Continued Rollout of the Vaccine

We’ve all been anxiously waiting for the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, so we can all return to some sort of normalcy, and it sounds like we are on the homestretch. As of 3/16/21, over 2 million shots have been administered in the state of Wisconsin. At this rate, it won’t be long until we can enjoy the company of friends and family in the beautiful spring weather.

We know that winter in Wisconsin is usually challenging, but this one was especially trying due to the pandemic. However, many evident clues are signaling the return of the spring.

Which signs of spring do you look for each year? Let us know in the comments below.

All of us at Lions Pride would like to be the first to say, “Happy Spring!”

Many of us will agree that summer 2020 is unlike any summer in recent memory. Although we may still be able to go out and soak up plenty of Vitamin D, there’s likely a lot of people we’d like to see and various events we’d love to attend.

The latest national event seeing drastic changes is the Indianapolis 500. There were six times in history where the race was cancelled due to war, but the first time, no fans will be in attendance watching the race in real-time.

The Indy 500 originally scheduled for Sunday, May 24, was postponed. In June, Indianapolis Motor Speedway made plans to reschedule the event for August and drop the maximum capacity down 50% (approximately 175,000 fans.) They were hoping the situation wouldn’t change, but the pandemic had other plans. Since the June 26 announcement, Marion County in Indiana has seen positive cases of coronavirus triple and positivity rates double.

Penske Entertainment Corp president and CEO Mark Miles says that he hopes fans know that they’ve done everything possible to continue the race with an audience. Still, they were committed to putting the health and safety of the community first for the very beginning.

Officials recently concluded that the 2020 race happening on Sunday, August 23, will be closed to the general public. Fortunately, those who had purchased tickets will be credited for the 2021 race and retain their seniority.

We’ve seen it time and time again this summer, but coronavirus has been the ultimate party crasher. Here at Lions Pride, we’ve had to cancel or postpone our favorite events like the Sporting Clays Fundraiser, our annual meeting and the Friendship 100.

What events and activities have you personally been missing this summer? Let us know in the comments below.

We know that 2020 has anything but a typical year but remember that we’re all in this together, and we will get through the uncertainty in due time. Hang in there!

The Importance of Good Sun Protection

Lions Camp

This summer may be cooler than normal, but you can still get a nasty sunburn despite cloudy or cool conditions. Did you know that skin cancer has increased by 200 percent in the last 40 years? It’s true. Although melanoma is one of the most preventable diseases, it is the most dangerous type of cancer. In fact, it’s estimated that approximately $8 million is spent each year on treatment of all skin cancers.

Tan skin is many times seen as a sign of good health, but really it is just the opposite. We need to do our part to debunk this myth while educating our children about the good sun protection and the dangers of skin cancer.

Young children in particular should be extra careful out in the sun because those with bad sunburns have seen to have a greater risk of skin cancer later in life. Doctors recommend applying at least one ounce of 30 or higher before sun exposure. It should then be reapplied every two hours, but more often if swimming or sweating. The American Academy of Dermatology has a lot of great information on their website.

Wisconsin Lions Camp staff take camper protection very seriously. All of the counselors help campers apply sunscreen before the day’s activities begin and generously re-apply throughout the day. Campers do not spend a lot of time in direct sunlight, they take multiple shade and water breaks. Hats are also a recommended item on the camper checklist.

Summer may be slowly winding down and the sun may not out as long as it was in late June, but it’s still extremely important to keep good sun protection in mind. If you and your child or grandchild will be spending time in the great outdoors, don’t forget about the sunblock. Make applying sunscreen a part of your every day routine, not just on sunny days!
