Can you believe only eight days remaining in the  2016-2017 Lionistic Year? It feels likeCurrent DGEsonly yesterday that we were welcoming the upcoming district governors. Then, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, our DGs made their way through their terms and added “Outgoing” to their titles.

Now, it’s time to welcome a new group! Next week, our DGEs will be meeting in Chicago to complete their intensive training seminar where they will learn about their new roles and responsibilities as leaders. The group will then participate in the highly anticipated 100th Annual Lions Club International Convention.

The seminar unofficially begins on Tuesday, June 27, with registration, a DGE and companion photo shoot, single district orientation and a welcome reception at Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Wednesday morning will kick off at 8:30 am with the opening ceremony followed by a general keynote session from Nick Vujicic, an Australian motivation speaker who was born with a rare disorder called tetra-amelia syndrome (the absence of arms and legs). Afterward, the group will take part in a companion session and three classroom sessions.

On Thursday morning, our DGEs will hear from First Vice President Dr. Naresh Aggarwal as well as Sister BK Shivani, an Indian spiritual teacher and inspirational speaker. The day will then hold another companion session and three more classroom sessions.

Then on Friday morning, the group will take part in general sessions about LCIF and New Service Framework, followed by the closing ceremony, classroom and goal setting sessions and the celebration banquet.

On behalf of all of us at Lions Pride, we’d like to wish all of our DGEs well on their journey to Chicago and their upcoming term. We know that you have an exciting and fulfilling adventure ahead. Thank you for your service!

It’s that time again; time for the USA/Canada Leadership Forum. lions-100th-anniversaryLast fall, we were fortunate to attend the 2015 Forum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and, we are attending again this year, in Omaha, Nebraska.

For the past 39 years, Lions from all over North America come together to participate in the largest and greatest Lions Club Leadership Training Event. Over the course of the next three days, Lions will have the opportunity to take part in dozens of leadership seminars, browse the expansive exhibitor hall, listen to inspiring speakers and (re)connect with friends.

The 2016 Forum will be slightly different than the past conferences because there will be a primary focus on preparing for the Lions Club 100th Anniversary. If you recall, to celebrate our milestone anniversary, we, as Lions, have been challenged in accomplishing 100 million acts of service. In addition to participating in several of the 60+ seminars, Forum Participants are invited to partake in three service projects representing four service campaigns:

Engaging Our Youth

Sharing the Vision

Relieving the Hunger

Protecting the Environment

We can’t wait to participate in another weekend of learning and fun with the arguably the greatest company – thousands of Lions!

On behalf of Lions Pride, we’d like to wish all of our traveling friends, safe travels, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at the forum.

One of the great highlights of 1st Vice District Governors is traveling to the Leader Dogs Campus in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The 1st Vice Governors and their spouses have the opportunity to learn more about the organization itself, explore the service areas, meet the trainers and see the canines in action.

Last year, Leader Dog was knee-deep in their Canine Development Center Renovation. A portion of the old kennel was demolished, and everything was getting cleared to prepare for the initial groundbreaking, which took place in August 2014.

Let’s fast forward about 12 months and check in to see how construction is progressing; things are really taking shape! The Leader Dogs Team has entered the final phase of their renovation. The exterior of the building is nearly complete, and they have now moved to the interior of the east wing.

With any construction, there is going to be some sort of rearranging and the Leader Dogs reconstruction is no exception. For the past year, the staff and the dogs have been in temporary spaces, but it looks like their patience is going to be handsomely rewarded. Just this week, the newest Future Leader Dogs got to check out the new outdoor play area that Lions and Lionesses helped build.

The idea behind the project was to create the best possible environment to breed, train and care for the Leader Dogs and to better serve their clients. The plans for the Canine Development Center campaign began in August 2013. They still expect to complete their final phase in October 2016. To see their entire construction process, please visit their Flickr page.

From all of us at Lions Pride, we’d like to say, “Congratulations,” to the entire staff at Leader Dogs for the Blind. We know that getting through a reconstruction is a difficult task, but we are so excited to see what the future holds for your organization after completion. Keep up the great work!

LCICon FukuokaOver 700 District Governor-Elects from around the world (including our very own Geri Schlender) are getting a head start to LCICon Fukuoka this weekend. They, along with thousands of other Lions, are traveling thousands of miles to the 99th Annual Lions International Convention.

As you most likely know, the 2016 convention is taking place in Fukuoka City, Japan, from June 24 to June 28. Our DGEs are headed there a few days early to participate in extensive training seminars.

In their three-day session, the District Governor-Elects will receive comprehensive leadership development training and education about their roles and responsibilities as leaders in Lions Club International.

If you think these DGEs will be participating in nothing but fun and games before the convention, think again! All of the upcoming officers received homework ahead of time. Just take a look at their assignment guide. Fortunately, if we have any procrastinating DGEs, they will likely have a chance to finish reviewing their 55-page guide during their 17-23 hour plane ride.

The District Governor-Elects will then be joining Lions from all over the world to participate in the international convention. The theme of this year’s International President, Robert Corlew is New Mountains to Climb. The metaphor for the 2016 theme is, of course, a mountain to symbolize something that is challenging and takes a maximum effort to accomplish. It is only be climbing the mountain that we truly succeed. New mountains represent new challenges and new opportunities.

As we enter into our 100th year of Lions service, we are given a chance to honor our past and embrace our present, but to keep moving forward, we need to plan. To conquer our next mountain, we must lay out a trail.

We are excited to hear about the experiences of those planning on attending 2016 LCICon Fukuoka! If you are attending the convention, what are you most looking forward to?

Lions Pride would like to wish the DGEs, and participating Lions, safe travels as they make their way to Japan and home again!

Carl 'Energizer' OlsonWe’re on the road again! This week, Lions Pride will be heading to Green Bay for the 2015 B2 Convention. While we look forward to all of our conventions, we’re especially excited for this one. Our excitement is due to the all-star line-up of convention presenters.

This weekend’s topics will include blindness myths and realities, annual vision screening results and club management tips. We will also hear from a special guest, PDG Len Quinn, field representative for Leader Dogs for the Blind. Len will be discussing the “Leader Dog in Prison” program.

Before Leader Dogs become, well, Leader Dogs, they start out as puppies in need of socialization. To accomplish this important job, Leader Dogs for the Blind have found success by working with prisons. For approximately one year, inmates work to raise Future Leader Dogs by naming the puppy, housebreaking and basic obedience training. The program has been going on for nearly nine years and has seen outstanding results. We don’t want to spoil any more of the details so you’ll just need to hear it from Len this weekend.

On Saturday, get ready to get energized! The Luncheon Speaker is Carl “Energizer” Olson. Carl founded “Energizer Olson” in 1993 after a successful career in education and coaching. He is on a mission to empower his clients for success with motivation, attitude and current theory as well as humor. Energizing is his forte, so we are all in for a real treat.

We’ve got another weekend of fun ahead of us. Who else is excited for the B2 Convention? Lions Pride is looking forward to seeing you there!

It’s hard to believe, but we made our way through another month and another season.

Fall in Central Wisconsin

We may only be a week in, but the crispness in the air tells us that autumn is definitely here.

This weekend, our Council of Governors will be having their second annual meeting and the 1st Vice Governors will be attending a training session, but what are you doing? If you love the changing fall colors, you may want to get out and explore!

According to Travel Wisconsin’s Fall Color Report, Portage County is only 35 percent into peak color; however, Northern counties such as Sawyer, Price and Oneida are already reaching their peak. If you’ve been longing for a road trip, this may be the opportunity.

Lions Pride researched Travel Wisconsin, and found they put together a guide for 11 scenic drives to take advantage of when the leaves are turning. One drive is actually not far for many of us; did you know that three of the state’s highest points are right here in Central Wisconsin? Ride along the Hilltop Tour to take in the color from a different angle. Climb up the 60-foot observation tower in Rib Mountain; hike up Timm’s Hill (the highest point in the state) and overlook the colorful hillside at The Highground near Neillsville.

If you don’t consider yourself to be a follower, you can always come up with a fall foliage trip of your own. With all of the scenic highways and rustic roads in Wisconsin, finding an appealing path shouldn’t be a big challenge.

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year in our state. Be sure to take a step back and take it all in when it’s here. And don’t worry about our Lions Leadership Team – they won’t be working all weekend so there will still be plenty of time for them to relish the fall colors, too.

From all of us here at Lions Pride, enjoy your fall weekend!

Welcome back! We hope you all had a great holiday weekend and your four day workweek is going smoothly.

Our workweek may be shorter, but is not any less busy! On Saturday, we will be participating in the Council of Governors and WLF Directors Training at Lions Camp.

During the training, our very own President, Dewey and Executive Director, Geri will be presenting.  Their presentation titled, “Piece of the Puzzle” will talk about the history, future and importance of the Lions Pride Endowment Fund and how it supports the projects of the Wisconsin Lions Foundation today and in the future.

We are one piece of a very large puzzle that cannot be completed without each and every part.  We play the piece of the future.  Through the help of our generous donors, we are able to preserve, protect and provide financial support to the Wisconsin Lions Foundation.  Our sole purpose is to support the Wisconsin Lions Camp and all WLF projects.

We love what we do and are so proud to be a part of such a large puzzle with a great mission.  Check out our Facebook Page too!
